I can personally attest that maintaining a healthy diet while travelling is no simple task because I’ve spent a significant portion of the past year travelling. Since I rarely have a kitchen to prepare my own meals while travelling, I often eat elsewhere. Even if I do, I’m always too exhausted to want to walk all the way to the neighbourhood grocery store, wade through a confusing array of exotic ingredients, and then bring it all back to the hostel kitchen. Pit stops occasionally feature somewhat healthy alternative, although the selection is often limited.

Eating healthy while traveling can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. As a nutritionist, here are my top tips for eating healthy while on the go:

  1. Plan ahead: Research restaurants or grocery stores in the area you will be traveling to, and look for healthy options in advance. Consider packing healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and protein bars to keep you satisfied throughout the day.
  2. Stay hydrated: It’s essential to stay hydrated while traveling. Bring a refillable water bottle with you, and aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
  3. Choose wisely: When dining out, look for menu items that are grilled, baked, or roasted instead of fried. Choose dishes that are high in fiber and protein, such as salads, grilled chicken, and vegetables.
  4. Watch your portion sizes: Be mindful of your portion sizes and avoid overeating. If you’re unsure about the serving size, ask the waiter or waitress.
  5. Avoid sugary and alcoholic drinks: Sugary drinks like soda and alcoholic beverages are high in calories and can quickly add up. Instead, opt for water, herbal tea, or sparkling water with a slice of lemon.
  6. Stay active: Make time for physical activity while traveling. Go for a walk, do some yoga, or take advantage of the hotel gym if there is one.
  7. Be flexible: While it’s essential to eat healthy, it’s also important to be flexible and enjoy the local cuisine. Try new foods in moderation and savor the flavors.

By following these tips, you can maintain a healthy diet while traveling and enjoy your trip without compromising your health.
